Understanding Hearing Loss

Knowledge is the first step toward better hearing. Learn about the types of hearing loss, warning signs, and the truth about modern hearing technology.

Types of Hearing Loss

01

Sensorineural Hearing Loss

The most common type, caused by damage to the inner ear (cochlea) or auditory nerve. Most often a result of aging (presbycusis), noise exposure, or genetics. Typically permanent, but highly treatable with hearing aids or cochlear implants.

02

Conductive Hearing Loss

Occurs when sound cannot efficiently travel through the outer or middle ear. Causes include earwax buildup, ear infections, perforated eardrum, or otosclerosis. Often medically or surgically treatable.

03

Mixed Hearing Loss

A combination of both sensorineural and conductive components. Treatment may involve both medical intervention for the conductive element and hearing aids to address the sensorineural component.

⚠️ Warning Signs of Hearing Loss

Hearing loss often develops gradually. Watch for these common signs — the earlier it is identified, the better the outcomes.

Frequently turning up the TV or radio louder than others prefer

Asking people to repeat themselves often, especially on the phone

Struggling to follow conversations in noisy environments like restaurants

Misunderstanding words and responding inappropriately in conversations

Missing the sound of the doorbell, phone ringing, or alarm

Feeling mentally exhausted after listening or following conversations all day

Experiencing ringing, buzzing, or hissing sounds in one or both ears (tinnitus)

Withdrawing from social situations you once enjoyed due to difficulty hearing

Common Myths About Hearing Loss & Modern Hearing Aids

Myth

"Hearing aids are only for the elderly."

Fact

Hearing loss affects people of all ages — from newborns to young adults. In fact, the World Health Organization estimates that over 1 billion young people are at risk from unsafe listening habits. Today's discreet, tech-forward hearing aids are designed for active, younger users too.

Myth

"Hearing aids are big, bulky, and embarrassing."

Fact

Modern hearing aids are smaller than ever. Many styles — like Invisible-in-Canal (IIC) and Completely-in-Canal (CIC) — are virtually undetectable to others. Today's devices look more like wireless earbuds than traditional aids, and many are available in elegant, stylish designs.

Myth

"Hearing aids make everything uncomfortably loud."

Fact

Gone are the days of simple amplification. Today's hearing aids use sophisticated digital signal processing and artificial intelligence to selectively amplify the sounds you need — like speech — while automatically suppressing background noise. The result is a natural, comfortable listening experience.

Myth

"If I had real hearing loss, my doctor would have told me."

Fact

General practitioners rarely screen for hearing loss in routine checkups, especially in adults. Only an audiologist or hearing instrument specialist can provide the comprehensive diagnostic testing needed to accurately identify and characterize your specific hearing loss.

Myth

"I only have mild hearing loss — I can wait."

Fact

Even mild, untreated hearing loss is linked to accelerated cognitive decline, depression, social isolation, and increased fall risk. Research shows the brain begins losing its ability to process speech when it doesn't receive adequate auditory input. Early treatment preserves more of your natural hearing ability.

Myth

"Hearing aids won't help because I can still hear some sounds."

Fact

Most hearing loss is not total — it's a reduction in the ability to hear certain frequencies (typically high-pitched consonants like S, F, and TH). Hearing aids are precisely programmed to address your specific frequency profile, dramatically improving speech clarity without over-amplifying sounds you already hear well.

Myth

"Cheap over-the-counter devices are just as good."

Fact

OTC amplifiers provide basic amplification without the diagnostic fitting, Real Ear Measurement verification, or ongoing professional support that make prescription hearing aids effective. Improperly fitted amplification can actually cause additional hearing damage. A professionally fitted device from a licensed specialist delivers results that OTC products simply cannot match.

Myth

"Hearing aids don't connect to smartphones or TVs."

Fact

Virtually all modern premium hearing aids feature Bluetooth connectivity, allowing direct streaming from iPhones, Android phones, TVs, and tablets. Many also come with companion smartphone apps that let you control volume, adjust programs, and even track your health metrics — all from your phone.

Don't Wait — Here's Why Early Action Matters

On average, people wait over 7 years from first noticing hearing loss to seeking treatment. The consequences of waiting are very real — and very preventable.

7x

More likely to develop depression with untreated hearing loss

5x

Higher risk of developing dementia compared to normal-hearing peers

3x

Greater risk of falling and fall-related injuries due to reduced spatial awareness

Treatment doesn't just help you hear better — it protects your brain, your relationships, your career, and your independence.

On 11/28/25, I visited Clear Sound Hearing Care in Downey. I had been fitted with new hearing aids at HearUSA, but I was never satisfied with the fit and felt like I couldn't hear properly with them. The practitioner, Ivette, listened carefully to my concerns. She retested my hearing and reprogrammed the hearing aids I had previously purchased. For the first time, I can finally hear clearly — and I'm so happy with the results. If you need hearing aids, I highly recommend Clear Sound Hearing Care. They truly provide quality service, and I'm confident you'll be very satisfied. Thank you for helping me hear.

After dealing with so many hearing aid centers, we finally found genuinely helpful and friendly people to help my mom. Both Ivette and Marcos took good care of my mom from testing her hearing to ordering her hearing aid and getting it adjusted, set up and tested before we left. They also gave thorough instructions on the care and upkeep of mom's new hearing aid. It's refreshing to find people who genuinely care about their patients. Their prices were also very affordable. Thank you Ivette and Marcos for the awesome service!

The moment we walked into Clear Sound Hearing Care's office, practitioner Ivette warmly greeted my father and me. She paid great attention to detail and truly listened to my father's personal concerns. Ivette spent quality time testing him and thoroughly explained his hearing loss and her recommendation for hearing aids with patience and care. Her kindness, professionalism, and dedication to patient care were deeply appreciated. We felt seen and cared for — something that is sadly fading in healthcare today. Thanks to her expertise, my father is now hearing well, and the recommended hearing aids have significantly improved his quality of life. If you want the best care for your hearing needs, look no further. Thank you, Ivette — you are a true blessing!

Before I went to see her I had been unable to hear from my right ear for about a year and a half. Well, before I left Ivette Espinosa's clinic I could hear the ants crawling — that's how clear and perfect I could hear sounds again. Ivette worked her magic and found the best hearing instrument to bring back the sounds in my ear. I had the best experience at Clear Sound Hearing Care. God bless you and your kind, patient heart.

Yo he usado aparatos desde el 1986, y nunca había recibido un servicio tan profesional y actualizado. He visitado muchas clínicas y nunca había obtenido este servicio súper profesional. Le doy 5 estrellas! I have used hearing aids since 1986, and in that time I have never had such a professional and modern service like this. Over the years I've visited many clinics and have never experienced such excellent service. 5 stars and a very happy customer.
